Ready Set Write - Week 5

Ready Set Write is a summer writing intensive that provides an opportunity for us to cheer each other on wherever we’re at in our writing—planning, drafting, or revising. This year, your RSW hosts are Alison MillerKaty UppermanErin FunkElodie Nowodazkij, and Jaime Morrow

Join us by posting your updated goals on your blog, and linking up with the widget on any of the hosts' blogs posted every Monday morning.

1. How I did on last week’s goals: One thing this writing intensive is teaching me is how to set attainable goals. I realize I've been setting my goals too broad and not really making as much progress as I want. Soooo....

2. My goal(s) for this week:

  • Spend every morning (M-F) working on my revision 9-12.
  • Set aside time every afternoon/evening for more writing time (TBD).
  • Hit the gym 5x this week.
  • Attend 1 yoga class (my first!).
  • Finish reading Bone Gap.

3. A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised: Overall, I've been feeling like my progress is not enough. There's never enough time or I'm feeling spread too thin. I think these new goals are going to help, and I'm excited to see where I am next week.

  1. I hope you love your first yoga class -- can't wait to hear about how it goes! Also, I find that the more specific my goals, the better. Best of luck with yours this week, Valerie!

  2. I love the cover for Bone Gap. I really want to read it too, just yanno, that TBR pile... Best of luck to you this week!

  3. Specific goals work really well for me. I hope you have the same luck with them! I'm too broad, I find too much wiggle room within them (ie. I don't do much but still manage to meet the goal). Smaller specific goals are great because they're more attainable and you come away feeling proud of yourself. Which is great! Hope this is a productive week for you, Valerie!

  4. I hear you on being spread too thin. I feel like I'm crawling on everything this summer. I hope your new goals help with the progress. Looks like you're trying to establish a consistent routine, which always seems to help. Good luck this week and enjoy BONE GAP! Loved it!

  5. I do broad kind of goals too most of the time, but they seem to work for me... usually. Maybe I should try being more specific.
    Have a great week!

  6. That is one of the neat things about RSW - folks finding out what works for them in terms of goal setting. I know I HAVE to do word counts while other people do great with a time goal. Good luck with your goals this week! Cheering you on!

  7. I know that feeling well, feeling like you haven't done enough. But I always tell myself, progress IS progress, big or small. ;)
