Ready Set Write - Week 7

Ready Set Write is a summer writing intensive that provides an opportunity for us to cheer each other on wherever we’re at in our writing—planning, drafting, or revising. This year, your RSW hosts are Alison MillerKaty UppermanErin FunkElodie Nowodazkij, and Jaime Morrow

Join us by posting your updated goals on your blog, and linking up with the widget on any of the hosts' blogs posted every Monday morning.

1. How I did on last week’s goals:
  • Finish this revision. I'm ready to turn this puppy in. √ Done! *cheers*
  • Hit the gym 4x this week. X - 3X
  • Attend 2 yoga classes. √ - 3 classes!
  • Read one book. I have The Boleyn Wife and The Poisonwood Bible on my stack--so either one of those. √ I finished the Boleyn Wife

2. My goal(s) for this week:

  • Write 5K words. I'm super excited to start my new summer project!
  • Hit the gym 4x.
  • Attend 2 yoga classes.
  • Read Sarah Dessen's Saint Anything (I started over the weekend and it's sooo good).

3. A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised: Finished! :D

4. The biggest challenge I faced this week: Continuing. There's something about finishing a huge revision or crossing a finish line that makes me want to collapse. For me, that's only going to make it harder to start back up again. I'm a fan of giving myself some breathing space before I dive back in, but not taking an actual "break."

5. Something I love about my WiP: That it's a fresh start. With the manuscript I just finished revising, I'd been working on it for a year and three months. As much as I love the story, I'm ready to go hang out with some new characters.

  2. Congrats on finishing your revision! That is a wonderful feeling and yes, you do need (and deserve) a bit of a breather after that. But it is a great feeling to get excited about new characters. :) Hope you have a great week!

  4. You're doing awesome, Valerie! Big congrats on finishing that revision -- what an awesome feeling! I'm loving SAINT ANYTHING too, though, have you noticed that Sarah Dessen has a specific sentence structure she uses a lot? ("I sat down, grabbing my coffee, and took a sip," for example.) Like, it's not even a big deal, but now that I've noticed it I can't UNnotice it. Maybe I'm weird. :-) Anyway, have an awesome week, lady!

    1. This comment was supposed to go here:
I notice Sarah Dessen's quirks because I've listened to several of her books on audio, and it makes nuances like that really obvious. Her characters frquently react the same too: I just stood there, staring. I just sat there. I just stared. I just etc (the frozen, speechless, staring reaction.)

  7. A year and three months is a long haul, so you definitely deserve some breathing space! Way to go on finishing that revision! I can relate on the whole continuing issue. Mentally it feels like "yay, I'm done!" So it's hard to gear up for whatever comes next. Good luck with your goals, especially starting this new project! :)

    1. Oh, almost forgot! I wanted to thank you for posting your "Agents Like Us" segments. I've found them very handy for agent research, especially since they're recent. You're a lifesaver!

  10. Woohoo!!! Congrats on finishing the revision!!! I really admire you for diving back in to something new right away. I always say that...and then somehow it is six months later and all I have done is eaten a ton of potato chips :) Am sure you will do better!! Good luck!

  12. Hooray for finishing! *throws confetti and dances*

Several years ago, I bought a clutter-reducing book in a bargain bin. It was written by Don Aslett, I think.

His base premise was that beginnings and endings are hard...the middle of anything requires the least effort and focus.

He suggested having several projects going, at different stages of completion, so that while you're beginning some things and ending others, some will be humming along...

I don't know if that will fit with your life or your process, but, if it does....

    Have a lovely week!
