What's Up Wednesday - 10.2.13

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up.

You can participate by going to Jaime's blog here. Or Erin's blog there.

Yay! It's Wednesday!

What I'm Reading

I'm reading Katie McGarry's CRASH INTO YOU which is a companion novel to PUSHING THE LIMITS and DARE YOU TO that features Isaiah, who is quickly becoming my favorite character of the series.

Contemporary companions are tricky because it's rare I feel emotionally invested to know what happens after the first story is over. The best thing about Katie's books are that her companions completely stand alone so even though I know a lot of the characters, they are told in a really fresh way.

What I'm Writing

I started my second draft this week and am really, really happy with how the story is shaping up. This is such a weird part of the process because it's less about hitting word count and just shaping what's in front of you. It's probably my favorite part.

Also, I'm still so in love with this story.

What Else I've Been Up To

I went to see Simone Elkeles yesterday at a signing here in Philly and she was so fun and entertaining. She talked a lot about the cover models for her Perfect Chemistry series and how she shoots her own promotional videos for her books. Wild Cards looks really good and I can't wait to dive into this one.

My TBR pile is getting ridiculous. I also picked up Jessica Martinez's The Space Between Us and Marissa Meyer's Cinder this week. I also have a bunch of stuff I was just approved for on NetGalley so I am super excited to dive into some reading this week!

What Inspires Me Right Now

My BFF gave me this card for my birthday and it's one of my favorite things ever.

Do you get it? (Because you are!)

Have an awesome week!

  1. Good luck with your second draft. First drafts are by far my favorite to write. During revisions I second guess and stew and fret and go crazy. :/
I love Simone Elkeles! Adding Wild Cards to my TBR ASAP.

  2. I don't know if I have Crash into You on my TBR list. I loved Pushing the Limits, so I definitely want to read CiY.

    1. It's really good! In fact, I think I like it most out of all 3 books!

  3. I've grown to really love revising, rewriting, editing, and polishing. It shows how much I've matured as a writer, and, in the case of my much-older books, is almost like getting to write that book all over again because of how many new scenes and substitutions I get to create.

    1. I agree! I can go over a story sooo many times and not get tired.

  4. I haven't read any of Katie McGarry's books, but I'm pretty sure I have at least one on my Kindle. (That's pretty much where books go and hide on me.) I really do need to get around to reading them. Good luck with your second draft! I love adding in all the bits and pieces that fill the story out, so I'm kind of excited for you. Have a great week, Valerie! :-)

  5. Good luck with your second draft, that's also my favourite part of the writing process. I love seeing the story get better and better as I edit. :)

  6. Second drafts are awesome, aren't they? So glad you're loving yours. Sometimes you get to that point, scratch your head, and wonder what you were thinking. =) Glad that's not your story. Enjoy the ride, eh?

  7. Revising and rewriting are great when it's going well and you can see your work improving. I enjoy that part - it almost makes the previous part, where I'm usually despairing about how I'm going to fix all the issues, worth it! :P

  9. Love the card! And all those books look AWESOME!!! I love the Perfect Chemistry series and this one looks just as HAWT.

Also, yes - I LOVE the second draft of a story. And you said it so well - it's not about hitting word count and more about shaping the blob. :) And yay for you for still being so in love with your story! I feel that way about mine too. :)

Hope you have a wonderful week!

  10. Congrats on reaching your second draft. I like the second draft okay, but the first draft is my favourite. I just love playing with my imagination and seeing where it leads.

  11. I love that whole shaping part of the process too. I find it less stressful than drafting, and it's when the story really starts to feel like it's taking on a personality of its own. Glad to hear your second draft is going well!

    Also, that card is adorable!

  12. I'm so envious that you've entered the revision phase... Drafting from scratch is SO hard for me and while revisions are never simple, they're definitely my favorite part of the process. I'm really intrigued by CRASH INTO YOU. I've read the other books in that series and I like Katie McGarry's style. It's very romance-novel-esque -- fun to read!
